Flying Squirrel Tour

1 Day

Flying Squirrel (Pteromys volans (L.)) is a rare species, with a living range from the Baltic Sea in the west to the Pacific coast in the east. In Estonia, they live only in the northeastern part of the country and due to its nocturnal lifestyle, only a handful of people have seen it. On this tour, you have the unique possibility to learn about this magnificent animal from our expert/guide, who speaks both English and German and has dedicated over 30 years of his life to researching this secretive mammal.

Overview

This secretive mammal is almost impossible to see without a guide. We offer flying squirrel tours with a local specialist. During the tour, we first look around in the habitat of the flying squirrel to get a better understanding of the needs and preferences of this endangered species. Then there’s a break for about an hour before returning to the spot about 1-1,5 hours before the sunset. The Flying Squirrels are active mostly during the dark hours, so after returning to the spot before the sun sets, there’s also a relatively good chance to see the mammal itself.

Itinerary

During the first part of the tour, you’ll first meet the mammal specialist/expert in a location given after the booking. Together with him, you’ll first go to known habitats of the Flying Squirrel and learn why the little mammal needs such special conditions and what conservation efforts need to be taken to improve its current situation. There are several trail cameras put up in its breeding area, which you check together with the guide and get the latest information about its movement.

Depending on the time of the year and what info the trail cameras send, there’s a chance that the Flying Squirrel might even show itself during the day.

Day 02 :
Evening

As the Flying Squirrel is nocturnal, its most active period starts after/during the sunset. By that time, you have settled in near one of the possible trees it is staying in. Then you’ll just have to be patient and wait for the squirrel to leave the cavity. It’s never a 100% certain thing, that the squirrel will show itself before gets pitch black, but the chances are always quite good.

Included

  • A day with the Flying Squirrel expert
  • Transport
  • Food and beverages
What kind of clothes should I wear for this tour?

We strongly suggest taking waterproof clothes and shoes with you. Also, as part of the tour takes place after the sun has already set, it’s better if you have warm clothes in the backpack.

Extra tip: While waiting for the squirrel to come out, you might want to sit, so a seat cover or camping chair might come in handy.

Will there be a lot of mosquitos?

It depends on the time of the year, but it’s always good to have a mosquito repellent or even a hat with a mosquito net with you. If it’s the peak of the mosquito season, there will certainly be some in the forest.

Thank you very much for arranging the squirrel excursion. Uudo is a great guide and a very dedicated biologist. We had very good views and a great time 👍It showed three times and once was out running up and down the tree. Parts of the group saw it flying! We went back in the night but saw nothing.
