Last night, one of our trail cameras in Matsalu National Park captured a wonderful moment: a female Eurasian lynx passing by with her two cubs.
The diverse landscapes of Matsalu National Park provide excellent habitat for the Eurasian lynx’s two main prey species in this area — Roe Deer and European Hare. Birds are also certainly part of the lynx’s diet. Matsalu and western Estonia as a whole are among the best birdwatching areas in Europe, with hundreds of thousands of different swans, geese and ducks breeding here or passing through during migration.
It is known that Estonian lynx even venture to the coast and into shallow coastal waters to hunt larger waterbirds. This combination of forests, meadows, wetlands and abundant prey seems to suit the lynx very well, and we sincerely hope that this mother will successfully raise her two cubs to adulthood.
Our scheduled Lynx and Large Carnivore Tour this autumn is already fully booked. However, it is still possible to arrange a private lynx-watching tour. In 2027, we will also offer several different opportunities to see Eurasian lynx in Estonia.
