The hide is open from the end of December until beginning of March.
In Estonia, more than 60 pairs of Golden Eagles and over 300 pairs of White-tailed Eagles nest, and both of these eagle species also stay here for the winter. During their winter foraging, both golden and white-tailed eagles regularly visit our eagle hide areas.
Our eagle hides are located in Alutaguse, about an hour and a half’s drive (130 km) from Tallinn. From the parking area, it’s about a 300-meter walk to the hides. The hides are heated and equipped with warm running water and a toilet. The hide has two separate bedrooms, a dedicated photography room, and a living area equipped with an electric kettle.
The Premium hide has four photo openings — two positioned higher and two lower. It comfortably accommodates two photographers and up to six people in total. When you book the Premium hide, you always get exclusive use of the entire hide, and the price does not depend on the number of visitors.
In addition to eagles, visitors can photograph and watch Ravens, Grey-headed and Great Spotted Woodpeckers, Hooded Crows, Magpies, Jays, various tits, Bullfinches, and other wintering passerines — and occasionally also Goshawks, Sparrowhawks, Ural Owls, and Pygmy Owls. Mammals sometimes appear near the hides as well, such as Elk(Moose) Wild Boar, Raccoon Dogs, Pine Martens, and Roe Deer — and with a good luck, even Wolves or Lynxes.
Overview
In Alutaguse, snow usually covers the ground from around Christmas until the mid of March. The eagles land on a snowy clearing dotted with a few solitary trees, about 30 meters from the hide. At the far edge of the clearing, roughly 100 meters from the hide, there is a large, dark forest.
The hide has two bedrooms, a separate photography room, and a living area. There are chairs for seating and windows covered with one-way mirror film, allowing you to observe the birds undisturbed.
If you wish, you can arrive the evening before and stay overnight in the hide, so you don’t have to travel early in the morning.
