Ruff lek photography hide

This wildlife photography hide is set-up specially for taking photos of waders and waterfowl. It is situated in Southeastern Estonia, near the fishponds of Pikla. The photography hide looks exactly like a giant boulder and is situated on a wet meadow – an annual lekking site for Ruffs.  Besides the main attraction, it’s possible to spot and photograph Black-tailed Godwits, Common Redshanks, Wood Sandpipers, Spotted Redshanks, Garganeys, Northern Shovelers and Graylag Geese.

Main species: Ruff (Philomachus pugnax)

Additional species: Common Redshank (Tringa totanus), Black-tailed Godwits (Limosa limosa), Wood Sandpiper (Tringa glareola), Spotted Redshank (Tringa erythropus), Common Greenshank (Tringa nebularia), Northern Shoveler (Anas clypeata), Garganey (Anas querquedula), Greylag Goose (Anser anser), Common Tern (Sterna Hirundo), Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea)

Angel of photography: Large low to high camo-netted window in front, and medium-level holes in the sides. The front angel is smoothly adjustable through a studio railing system

Photography environment: Hide is floating on 10-30 cm deep water. It’s an open wet meadow

Movability during the session: Some limited adjustment is possible during and between the sessions. Fixed close to the centre of the lekking site

Distance from the housing/car and access: 230 meters through shallow water and wet meadow

In and out times: In – 2 hours before sunrise. Out – approx. 11 AM after the lek

Angel of lighting: Side -and front lighting

Recommended lens(es): 500 mm (400-600 mm)

Provided photo equipment: Studio rail for fixing and smooth height adjustment for tripod head

Other necessary photo equipment: Tripod ball- or gimbal head

Clothing and footwear: Very warm – gloves, winter hat. Neoprene waders provided (water depth is approx. 20-50 cm with a muddy bottom)

Comfort equipment: Mattresses, sleeping bag provided

Convenience equipment: Dry close bucket included

Capacity: 1 or 2 small/close persons

Price: 105€ per person per day
