Black Grouse lek photogrpahy hides

There are 3 separate hides for photographing a Black Grouse lek at two separate lekking sites.

Black Grouse lek hide in Alutaguse, Northeastern Estonia

The hide, or a hide tent to be more precise, is located next to a small bog. The spot is annually used as a lekking site and about 10 Black Grouse cocks attend the lek. The photography hide is situated about a km away from the nearest possible parking space.

Capacity: up to 4 persons

Price: 60€  for one person and 105€ for 2 persons

Season: March 10th to May 15th

Black Grouse lek hides near Pikla, Southwestern Estonia

The other photography hide for observing a Black Grouse lek is situated about 40 minutes from Pikla fishponds, in Southwestern Estonia. The hide is situated on a meadow and the lek is annually visited by 15 Black Grouse cocks.

Main species: Black Grouse (Tetrao tetrix)

Additional species: Common Crane (Grus grus), Greater White-fronted Goose (Anser albifrons), European Golden Plover (Pluvialis apricaria), Northern Lapwing (Vanellus vanellus)

Capacity:  2 x 2 persons

Angel of photography: Separate portholes for  ground and mid-level photography

Photography environment: Wet large open fields with woodland background

Movability during the session: Not movable, the hides are too close to the lekking centre

Distance from the housing/car and access: 400 m, through a wet but solid field

In and out times: In – 2 hours before the sunrise, out – approx. 10 AM after the lek. Possible to stay overnight

Angel of lighting: Side -and front lighting

Recommended lens(es): 500 mm (400-600 mm) 

Provided photo equipment: Bean bags for low-level shooting

Other necessary photo equipment: Tripod and head for upper position photography

Clothing and footwear: Very warm – gloves, winter hat, waterproof boots or wellingtons available on request 

Comfort equipment: Matrasses, sleeping bag provided

Convenience equipment: Dry close bucket included

Price: 105€ per person per day

Season: March 10th to May 15th
